i have reformatted my computer back to its original software before xp had any service packs

No. You can directly upgrade to Service Pack 2 from a default XP installation.

No. Service Pack 2 contains all the elements of Service Pack 1. You don't need to install them both. Just do Service Pack 2. Congratulations on making sure your operating system is up to date. Keep up the good work!

just go straight to service pack 2

No. You can just install SP2 if you have WinXp or WinXP SP1, It doesnt make any difference.

Note:

It all depends on the installation CD you have.
1. WinXP SP2 have Bootable and Installable Version, Which you can use to format and install directly like any other NT operating System. (Note: You can equally use it for Upgrade just the way you do when moving from an operating system to a higher version)
2. WinXP SP2 have an upgrade version which means if you have WinXP or WinXP SP1 on your system just upgrade it idea by using CD or Download and Install from http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html or go to Microsoft website and search for it

no you do not have to...service pack 1 is part of service pack 2
