I had my tonsils out 2 years ago and to be honest, at first it's not so bad because they give you really strong pain killers. After a while though, it gets worse. You get something called referred pain. I basically just had agonising ear ache as soon as my pain killers wore off. It was completely awful, and woke me up at night, but then I would just take pain killers and go back to sleep. A word of advise, you can request that the pain killers they give you are soluable so you can dissolve them in water because it can be quite hard to take tablets straight afterwards. Eating is hard too but they make you eat toast or crisps before you leave the hospital. I craved potatoes the whole time I was ill. I also got a post-op infection which made me feel rough but had anti biotics and it soon passed. All in all was signed off work for 5 weeks and it was really horrible - like the worst ever tonsilitus. But I will just say, it's one of the best things I've ever done because I feel so much better for it and don't have to worry about getting tonsillitus every time I'm a bit run down. I have noticed that I'm a bit more open to getting chest infections and upset tummies, but I suppose I'm still getting used to it.

I had my tonsils out a while ago and it is nothing to worry about. He will go in and when he comes out he will prob b uncofortable and wnat 2 go back to sleep because iot hurts. It isent pain that you cry or sream over he will just have a sore throat. Get him to ask for ice cream it really helps. Alot of people are sick after but i wasnt so he might not be. I recovered farly quickly to be honest and was eating just a few hours after so dont panic about it. It isent as bad as some people think.

I had my tonsills out a few years ago due to recurrent tonsillitis,so glad i did. Yes it is painful post op,but to be expected.Don't drink milk or eat chocolate as it tend to stick to the back of the throat, feels horrid! Also a few days after you get lots of slough at the back of the throat which is just the dead tissue,it may taste a little horrid, just get some mouthwash.

The bit no-one tells you is that they usually pack the back of your throat with wadding (to stop blood etc going down it) and put a breathing tube down your nose- so when he wakes up with a sore nose then that's why! Although he wont want to eat anything hard, it will help the healing process. Soluble painkillers help loads. He will feel sore for a bit but they don't remove tonsils without good reason these days so... Good luck.

Hmm, how old is he? i had mine out at 35 and wished I'd had them whipped out years before. to be honest, abt 6 hours afterwars, it was agony! i understand the pain is worse the older you get though as they dig deeper! pain killers post-op are quite good, but make sure you get some strong ones (liquid form) to take away.. it only lasts for a couple of days though and you feel much less 'ill' than you do with tonsilitis as there's no temp or shivering! i tried everything before \I had mine out, but it's been a total blessing. Good luck to you and him.. it's a bit like childbrith - v painful but with an end in sight.

Yikes!! Pain, pain & more pain is what he can expect postoperatively!! I think he's do so much better to have a second opinion as mentioned before. I have treated loads of adults & kids for recurrent tonsillitis & none have had to have tonsils removed as a result of great healing of homoeopathy. Don't knock it - look for a registered practioner in your area. The Society of Homeopaths lists your local Homeopath. It's great & far kinder than surgery - which isn't to be taken lightly!

i had mine out at the age of 28 after suffering recurrent bouts of tonsilitis every year since about 4 years old. the operation is simple. general anaesthetic. usually eat the next morning and no you don't need to eat only sloppy foods. they actually recommend that you eat toast these days. can be uncomfortable for a few days ater but taking regular soluble painkillers will help. and to be honest the pain is no worse than a bout of tonsilitis. hope this helps X

It's painful post op, but nothing like the pain of tonsillitis.

Tonsils are your immune system, he will need to eat soups, and teas after the operation.
Get a second opinion before removing tonsils, they are the bodys natural immune defence.
