The Star is only mentioned in Mathew 2. The tense in Vs 2 (saw and not " have been seeing") Means that they had seen it initially in the East . Interpreted the sight as the birth of the "King of Jews". Therefore they come to Jerusalem - the Capital of "Jewish Land"- where Herod (not the Star) sends them to Bethlehem(Vs. 8). Hearing the King they go on their way to Bethlehem, where they rejoice on seeing the Star above the house where Jesus was.
Therefore the Magi were led by the Star to undertake the Search, not lead as in going in front them till Bethlehem.

It would make sense, navigation by stars has always been very common, and it is beleived there was actually a visible supernova that appeared to be like a bright star right around the year 0.

So it is said. I believe when 'heavenly' events were looked at during this time period there were certain stars that could be seen very easily in the Middle East. So it is the legend.

I agree with the first answer but this star was probably more of a bright comet then a star.

Since they were probably Zoroastrians and a people who believed in astrology as a science...and because Scripture says so...I'd have to say YES.
