If you are looking for applications, games or utilities, I would suggest looking at Download.com. The Masthead says it all, "Safe, Trusted and spyware-free."

Download.com is a product of CNet. Downloads include freeware, shareware and demos for PC, Mac, Palm and Pocket PC. The software is logically categorized with a intuitive interface to sift through the hordes of files.

In most cases, a download will include a Publisher's Overview, a CNet Review, User Reviews and Screenshots. I often sort the category by the number of downloads to assess popularity. I refer to CNet and User ratings to refine my selection. Sometimes you'll fine an excellent developer is out to earn a name for him/her self. Absolutely free and unrestricted programs, may be found. For commercial software, Download.com provides the capability of running trials on several programs to determine what works best for a situation.

I recommend Download.com for those times when you need an application or utility and want the opportunity to try it before you possibly buy.

anything you download that is copywritten (music, movies, software, etc.) is illegal if you don't pay for it. Limewire, although is not illegal, promotes the illegal downloading of software.

So there is no legal way to get free downloads.
