I would recommend you have it done professionally since it is your first time ever coloring. It will cost a bunch, but in the end it will be worth it. Then you can ask them which store product you can buy to do touch ups. Most will tell you. If you have a lot of natural red in your hair, be careful, because bleaching it will turn it orange instead of blond (the store products not the professional). I have this issue. my hair is brown with a lot of red undertones in it. To get it to be the color blond I want I have to have it done professionally because they don't sell a product strong enough at the store that will bleach it without drying it out completely. If I do it myself I end up with a more strawberry color when I do it right or a copper color if I don't do it right. No matter how you have it done it will dry your hair some, so get a good conditioner made for bleached hair and you should be fine. I would start to go a few shades lighter than your natural color at first and gradually go lighter. If you are very dark it will be a shock to go bleach blond and you may not like it. Maybe do blond highlights first and go from there.

Whatever you do, do not use clorox type bleach, I know some morons that have tried that.It will coarsen the hair yes, but don't believe people when they tell you it makes your hair fall out, I've dyed my hair prolly 20-30 times, its never affected me.
It depends on what color hair you have.
If your hair is naturally dark, then you should use a 30-40 volume developer on it and let it sit.Usually 30-45 minutes does the trick.
If you have a lighter color hair, say light auburn red to ash blonde,
You can use a 20-30 volume developer that won't be as harsh on your hair. Of course with red hair you need a toner to take the red tint out. With a 20-30 volume you should leave it in longer, to make sure it adheres to your hair. If you are worried about it not fully bleaching your hair, you can get a color remover ( at Sally Beauty Supplies) for a buck that removes the color completely. Trust me you will be as blonde as Marilyn Monroe!
To keep your hair from wrecking, you can use mayo or eggs to moisturize after. I used Palmers Cocoa Butter on my hair, even though its not a hair moisturizer, it works wonders and makes it shiny.
Maybe you might think about Highlights if you are nervous about going that drastically?
A few highlights and low lights make a big statement!

Bleaching the hair often makes it somewhat coarse, frizzy, and brittle, although it'll only permanently damage if you bleach it on a regular basis. If you do decide to bleach it, it's probably best if you cut your hair to at least shoulder-length if it isn't already that short, because if it's any longer, then your hair really will look weird and frizzy. Try to get it professionally done, if you can, as if you bleach it at home it can turn out a real mess. Still, by the sounds of it, if you have blonde hair already, you don't really even need to bleach it properly. Just get some permanent dye. It's much less damaging to the hair and can make it many shades lighter. You can also get non-permanent dyes that lighten blonde hair, and last for around four washes. There are some misconceptions about bleaching. Bleaching is called highlighting. This process DOES lift the color pigment from your hair.
Damage can happen to your hair with highlighting if your hair is dry or damaged before the process, or if it is OVER processed.
If you have a professional stylist highlight your hair they can evaluate the condition, and color level of your hair and they will know how long to process your hair. They will check it during the processing time.
After highlighting, if you condition your hair after shampooing, your hair will be just fine. Keep your hair trimmed regularly. This will keep your ends healthy.

Please don't completely bleach your hair, it dries it out so bad. I used to have a friend that got her hair bleached every 6 weeks so that she didn't get roots and her hair was in such bad condition. The ends split really easily and it felt like straw.
If you really want blonde barbie hair then do it. If you want nice hair that's in good condition, then don't bother.
Also, you will have to get it done quite often coz blonde hair and roots looks awful. And if you don't actually like it, it can be quite hard or take quite a while to get rid of it all together.

Have it professionally done and expect to pay over $100. Never use the bleach kits in the boxes from the grocery store! If done professionally it will not damage your hair .

Seek professional advice re: this. Bleaching can make your hair dry and brittle, and result in split ends.

putting bleach on your hair will not take the color out. Only dye will change hair color.

If you have never dyed your hair - why would you want to bleach it??? Why not try hightlights instead - go slow.
