Okay - when all is said and done I think I will have spent about $250 per child (13 and 2.5 years). This is the only time of year that they get new toys (birthdays are are about $50 each) so I think this is reasonable. Thanks for your input - and I do agree with the person who said that is really does depend on your income. I wouldn't spend this much if I couldn't handle it.

I have only 2 children. And that isn't only toys - my daughter gets clothes that I wouldn't normally buy her (name brand 'in style' stuff) and they both have educational things mixed in with the frivolity.

I think it should be whatever price you can afford in ratio to your earnings. I am a single mom and spent about $200 on my 2 year old, which left me with plenty of money for family gifts.
Futhermore, I think as your children get older, their presents will get more costly, video games, TVs, CARS, hehe!
Just spend as much as you can afford and DONT spoil them! Let them pick out a gift to buy for charity also.

wow, looking at these other answers, i am shocked. how the hell do you keep a roof over your head if you spend a thousand dollars on presents?!?! these people are either totally loaded or up to their eyeballs in debt. i have 2 2 year old girls, and so far i have spent $40 on them for xmas, i got lucky and found 2 tricycles for $20 a piece. we're not spending any more than $15 on each of our other family members. if we have any money left over after we finish buying for the family, then i'm going to get cabbage patch kids for the girls, i think they're about $25 each.

A friend of mine spends around $400 each on her kids, and they have EVERYTHING!! I don't really look at dollar amounts for mine, I just try to make sure they have an even amount of gifts. I don't spend a whole lot. I think I have spent around $500 all together.

It depends on how many children and how much you have i guess. You also might be able to buy one expensive gift that multiple children would love. I would only spend around 150 per child with 3 children.

We usually split about one week's income between the two kids for Christmas. We usually do about the same for birthdays - half a week's salary.
That seems to be a reasonable amount without giving them too little or too much or putting us into crazy amounts of debt that we spend all year paying off.

I have spent about $285 on my 3 year old. I do sometimes feel like that is out of control. I do not go in debt, and it makes me very happy and it is the one time of the year that I get to do it.

We've spent about $100-200 per child. They're only 5 and 2 1/2, so they're not into the big ticket items yet.
