I am a professional photographer and might be able to help. This has been a discussion in the photographic industry for some time. Back in 2000 we bought the first CMOS pro camera the Canon D30 it was awesome. The chatter then was CMOS has less dust problem because it held less of a charge, it was less expensive to produce etc. Jumping to 2006 We now use Canon 5D at ~13 mpx and the CMOS vs CCD is sort of a non issue in the industry. They both work very good. The biggest issue with image quality is the lens attached to the camera. The better the glass the better the image. "L" lenses for Canon or "nikkor pro...ithink" for Nikon, Kodak and Fuji. To summarize I don't think the CCD vs CMOS should be the defining answer for a camera purchase. First ask yourself what type of photography you would like to do, then the feel of them in your hand"button, features etc. Then of course price...$300 or $20,000, sometime the job defines the price of the camera. If a SLR is what your after I suggest a full frame sensor such as the Canon 5D if that doesn't fit the budget try a Canon Rebel XTi. Hope I helped.

rsimons56....sorry to pry but the CMOS or the CCD has nothing to do with the shutter speed of a camera. And most video seems to be using an array of 3 CCD's (very different than still images) and wether or not a camera has a CMOS or a CCD usually depends on the brand. CMOS is to Canon as CCD is to Nikon.

Both CCD and CMOS have been around for many years. I guess you can say they're both OLD technologies. In the early days, CCD has more advantage in terms of quality but after all these years, CMOS designers have devoted intense effort to achieving high image quality, while CCD designers have lowered their power requirements and pixel sizes. As a result, you can find CCDs in low-cost low-power cellphone cameras and CMOS sensors in high-performance professional and industrial cameras, directly contradicting the early stereotypes.

Bottom line is, in terms of the sensor technologies itself. There's no one better than the other. Its all depends on what and how the manufacture do with that technologies itself.
