Different times, different church; it wasn't THE CHURCH as is today. People are not perfect, and we are given free will to make our own decisions. We are solely responsible for our own actions, it isn't God's fault.
-As to why people do the things they do, you must ask the individual. At best one can speculate without a proper explanation, but in the end its only speculation. It is important to learn from the past but not live in the past, so it is important for our generation to grasp the present and preserve it for the future. Perhaps then people will stop asking "why".
