I know that Accutane is the best option for me but I think the side effects are too great. Is there something that works really well that is less damaging to the body? I know people will answer with Proactive, but what are some other solutions?

Accutane really is the most effective, there is nothing I know of that works as well. Prescription topicals can help for some people. There are several--I use Retin-A, Differin, and Benzaclin (not at the same time!) and have seen dramatic improvement.

Good luck!

My Dr. wanted to put me on accutane and we were going to go through with it, but inorder to go on accutane you have to have been on birth control for 3 months. Well durring those three months my acne almost completely disapeard. So I stuck with that. I'm 22 and still have some trouble spots, but nothing like it was when I was 15. Try the birth control first, I went on Ortho Tri Cyclean which is supposed to help with acne. There is also a low version of this if you're worried about the weight gain. I tried every gel and cream on the market and BC was the only thing that ever worked. If accutane becomes the option, talk to you Derm. about doing a moderate does, like only pills every other day. Sometimes the BC and just a little accutane will do it, without doing the full course. Good luck to you! Hang in there I know it's frustrating.
