I have a young adult son with high fungtioning autism who is currently using the medication as a mood stablelizer but is not really able to articulate any strange side effects he may be feeling. He is really on edge and clearly unhappy.
I really need to be directed to a knowledgable web site that can address this issue. Medical professionals show little interest or have little time to address this concern. Thanks.

Autistics have a high incidence of very unusual/dangerous side effects with antipsychotic drugs. (This includes the class of atypical antipsychotics, which Risperdal is in.) I recommend reading through the website of Autistic People Against Neuroleptic Abuse at http://www.dinahm.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/.

I would have to say that Gabapentin has few side effects, however we are all different when it comes to medications. I urge you to go to your Library and look in the Reference section and ask for the P.D.R. with is your Doctors Bible of medications The P.D.R. stands for Physicians Desk Reference . You can look at all of them and I want to warn you not to be alarmed that they do testing on people taking all drugs and they will use about 1,000 people and if one has a side effect than it has to be listed. I don't take any medications that a Psychiatrist would prescribe, until I read about it myself. I have had Dummy's for Doctors that even though Im not Psychotic, they gave me an anti psychotic medication and if you arnt hectic the meds will make you that way and just like a Steven King Novel. You could have minor problems and they give you an antipsycotic and it makes you phycotic and instead of thinking the medication is doing it, they think your not getting enough and the next thing you know is you end up in the state mental Hospital. Be careful and stay away from lithium as it can build up and they have to keep taking blood test to check the levels of meds your taking. TAKE CONTROL of your treatment by researching medications in the P.D.R. at the library if they have labeled you with a problem , You can look that up and study that as well at the Library and to read the D.SM 4 R. It may be the D.S.M. % by now, but everyone should be involved with what these Doctors give you and Diagnose as well and any meds you may take, Please just watch out for side affects that you may not put 2 and 2 together as it could be caused by medications. Remember the biggest drug pushers are Shinks and You don't enjoy any kind of high. (sucks but true) Be in charge of your own care. . I was made pycotic by a Doctor that gave me a mood stabilizer. But I put 2 and 2 together and I was fine after stoping the meds. If it had of been up to the Doctor than he won't want to say he made a mistake and think Gee I think I should UP his dose. Its all in your library. Just read the P.D.R. for meds and D.S.M. 4 R or what ever replaced it as an update. Take charge of your care. Doctors make mistakes too. I have taken Gabapinton and I couldn't tell I was taking anything, but it could effect you in a lot of different ways. Contact if you want. My email is open Dave

Adverse reactions and side effects:
CNS: aggressive behavior, dizziness, headache, increased sleep duration.
This drug acts on the dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain therefore you may see mood alterations.
Your local pharmacy should have a brief synopsis of the drug on hand. The major thing with this drug is you have to watch out for extrapyramidal side effects which include muscle spasms, twitching, rigidity, difficulty swallowing, and abnoramal rythymic movements of the mouth face extremities. I hope this helps!

Look at http://www.webmd.com/ and http://www.libraryspot.com/features/medicalfeature.htm
Inside the page at libraryspot.com is a link to UCLA.

If your son is having serious side effects such as deep unhappiness,it would be smart to take him off of the risperdal and check his reaction.

No doctor call crawl into your sons body to see for themselves what his reactions are.

I quit a mood stabilizer because it made me nuts.I do not care what the doctor has to say,I was the one going through turmoil--not him.

People have thier meds changed and adjusted all of the time.It is a tweaking process.

Read this page:
http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-9846-Risperdal+Oral.aspx?drugid=9846&drugname=Risperdal+Oral

Cull through it carefully and you may well find your answer or a lead into the right direction.
