Crazydeb is right on. Usually the petitions that take a year or more to process are from high visa fraud countries which require more in depth security checks and higher levels of evidence of bonafide marriage before a visa is issued which can delay the petiton by several months.
And don't pay attention to ignorant people who think it is perfectly legal to enter the US as a visitor to marry and remain permanently, there are fiance visa and spouse visa categories for a reason. Entering the US as visitor with the sole intention of marrying and then staying permanently is illegal. You can marry in the US as a visitor, only if you intend to return to your country to await processing of a spouse visa, or if the marriage was completely spontaneous.

It depends where you file and the detials of whose petitioning and depends on that persons background but it usually takes from 6 months to 2 years.

it can take anywhere from a couple months to a couple years... mine took 9 months, my cousin's husband's took about 4 months, and I have seen others that took about 1.5 yrs. depends on where you apply and what else you are applying for I guess etc

It is just easier to get a tourist visa...then do the paperwork once they are here...
