It seems they sit in a chair and tell other people what to do...but maybe someone can add somecolor to my outline.

Good directors already have a vision of what the film looks like in their head BEFORE they start shooting.

His responsibility is to make the vision a reality. He does this by guiding actors and helping them with their performance and motivation, and giving the camera operator direction on how each shot should be filmed. This is all done to make his vision into a reality on screen.

He works from the script, and directs the actors and crew to make the film as the producer wants it made
