The definitions of these words vary, depending on the source. Lists with different criteria are kept by different nations and different environmental organizations. In the US, there is a Federal list under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and each state has its own list based on state law.
Under the ESA, threatened is defined as: any species which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range.
endangered is: any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range other than a species of the Class Insecta determined by the Secretary to constitute a pest whose protection under the provisions of this Act would present an overwhelming and overriding risk to man.
Extinct is not defined in the ESA, so Websters dictionary or similar source is used as a definition. Sadly, on this day (Dec. 12) in 1990, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a notice in the Federal Register that declared the endangered Dusky seaside sparrow extinct.
For examples, the entire ESA list is at this site:

Endangered means in danger of being extinct that is there are very few organisms of that species and it is in the danger of becoming extinct. Extinct means that there are no more organisms of that species on the earth. We cannot see them again And Most importantly let us not weep about the extinct ones but protect the endangered ones. Examples for endangered species is the tiger and the asiatic lion while the dodo bird is an extinct species.

There are three types of species extinction: local extinction when a species is no longer found in an area it used to inhabit but is in other places in the world, ecological extinction when so few members of a species are left that it can no longer play its ecological roles in its biological community, and biological extinction when a species is no longer found anywhere on the earth. Passenger pigeons are have been extinct since 1914. An endandangered species is on that has so few individual survivors that the species could soon become extinct. The Swallowtail Butterfly is an endangered species. A threatened species is still abundant in its natural range but because of declining numbers it is likely to become endangered in the near future. The grizzly bear is a threatened species.

Endangered are when animals are rare on the planet (Scarce) and extinct means they are no more on this planet. Examples of Endangered are Tigers, Pandas, Peacocks, Whales etc and examples of extinct are Dinosaurs.... We need to protect the endangered animals whereas we can't do anything about the extinct species as they are past history.
