Going to Italy in May, wondering if woman's fashion is different over there? I know I will stand out as a blond American but I would like to at least dress similar to a local.

I'm an Italian male not at all updated in women wearing but I do believe that all of us answerers we should be really a kind of prophets to know what will be women wearing (not only of Italians) at a 6 months distance. I feel the best suggestion I can give you is to buy something in the latest fashion just at yr arrival here.
If you buy it in the States (unless you spend a fortune to buy an Italian dress over there) it can't be in any way similar to a local one and then I consider safer and cheaper you buy it in Italy, without the risk to be out.

I have been to Rome twice and noticed how fashionable the people are. The young women do favor designer jeans with high heels and very pointy toes on them. In the evening they wear dresses with a little jacket and boots, also pointy toes. This will not do, the pointy toes, for going the tourist route but on a day when you will not be walking a lot you will be right in style. Also if you are at a street fair pick up a scarf, the Italians, men and women, love to wear them either on a dress or blouse or even over a coat. The food, by the way, is the best ever.

My dear, I really don't understand all this need to look like an Italian while in Italy....(you are not the first to ask this kind of question). You are American and you should just be yourself. Besides, even with Italian style clothes people will know you are a foreigner. Personally, when I travel, I don't care about dressing like the locals. My clothes speak about who I am. Moreover, you will find women dress differently here, depending on who they are and what's their style. A teenager might wear ripped jeans and over the belly botton t-shirt, a business woman will wear a tailleur, an eccentric woman will wear a long wide skirt and ethnic jewellery, a plain woman will wear jeans and a sweather, a sexi woman will wear a miniskirt, high heels ad sexy blouse....
My only advice is, don't wear tight clothes if you are overweight (we don't do that here), otherwise, wear whatever you like, and if you like Italian clothes, buy some while you are here.
Enjoy your stay!

Italians do like to dress nicely, but other than that it's about the same as what we wear here. The latest fashion there is basically the same as the latest fashion here. When I went there we were told to dress a little better than we normally do, but you want to be comfortable when you're traveling. And no matter what you do, as a blonde woman, you're going to stand out. Italian men love blonde women, so be prepared to be stared at.
If you like to shop, maybe you should just not pack very much and buy clothes when you get there. Unless you're shopping at a way high-end store in Milan, clothes there cost the same as they do here. In fact, you can buy nice clothing at outdoor markets for very little money. Even though the clothes don't look way different, it's still fun to have things from another country.

Women's fashion in Italy is not considerably different from fashion here. On a warm day, women may wear a skirt or shorts while on a cooler day pants are acceptable-much like here. They don't wear overly short skirts or shorts though-if you can mistake your shorts for underwear leave them at home! There are also many types of people and many different styles of dress. You have flamboyant people who will wear outrageous skirts, stylish blouses and tons of accessories, and then you have the people who just dress comfotably and will wear jeans and a t-shirt. My advice- just be yourself and enjoy Italy- it's a beautiful country and while you are there what you are wearing should be the last thing that you are thinking of.
Happy Travels!

I went to Italy last june. Do not bring jeans, shorts or sleeveless shirts. It is very frowned upon and you will not be allowed in churches and other places. I was told this info before I left and it is really important. It does get hot so try to bring cotton and light weight clothes. Capris and skirts are the best things to bring. Also, bring a strap across your chest purse. There's a good amount of theft so you need to watch out for that. Hope that helps! Have fun! Oh and bring good walking shoes-you'll need them.
