What makes a good dentist?

one that doesn't kill you

but if you trying to be one, here's some suggestions:
- learn how to understand what people are saying when they have stuff in their mouth. ex: OW! Mutha-fu*kah! Sh*t that hurt!
- give out tasty numbness medicine.
- be gentle in the mouth. it's very sensitive you know?
- be careful with that pokey stick that cleans out the plaque.
- give out candy and stickers. not floss, toothbrush and stickers. (just joking, dentists hate candy. i don't think they've even had one in their life!)

this would be really funny: before april fools day, tape a kid screaming in pain from some kind of dental work. then on april fools, play the tape before kids go into their first dentist appointment!
(just kidding on that one too, **a good dentist has to make the patients feel comfortable. **)

A good dentist has to be very friendly and gentle and able to put patients at ease.
Other than that, competence. Because you don't want the dentist to make mistakes that will make it take longer for him to get done. Also, efficiency.
I have nerves in my mouth that are difficult to get at, so I appreciate when the dentist gets the novicaine right the first time (and I've had other dentists that went through lots of needles before they got the right nerve, so i know it's a skill)

I usually just sort of go with my gut. Is the office staff respectful of you? Do they try to make you comfortable? Is the dentist polite? Do you feel that they are trying to "sell" you dental work that you don't feel is necessary? Are they causing you undue pain and discomfort?
