There is usually some swelling when arthritis flairs up. However - If this swelling continues up the leg toward the knee, I would call the doctor. Can you gently push on the top of the bottom of her leg? Does it leave a "dent"? If so, this is called pitting edima. If the swelling is going up the leg, you must call the Dr. This could be a sign of congestive heart failure. Good Luck

Edema (swelling) around the ankles is usually a sign of poor circulation and/or heart disease. She obviously has fluid build up and need to be put on a diaretic such a Lasix to help get rid of the fluid. She really needs to see her doctor.

She may have a blocked artery if she has any leg pain. Another cause of ankle swelling might be adema or poor lymphatic drainage. I don't think that arthritis is the problem. My Grandmother has it bad but her ankles got swollen because of poor lymphatics.
