I dont like to eat with public forks. At my college the cafeteria uses metal forks that everyone eats with, I really dont like the idea of eating with a fork that every student has used, even though they wash them sometimes I have seen old crap stuck on them. My dad says I am being stupid, but I dont know. I just dont see why they dont have disposable eating utensils. They wash them but I am sure they dont do a real good job of it, because there are so many.
Would it be nasty to use those forks, or am I just an idiot??

I agree with you. I dont like the idea of that either. You could buy a package of plastic utensils and keep them in your purse in a ziplock bag or something. I always ask for "go cups" at a restaurant also because I dont want my mouth touching the glasses that everyone in the world had drank from. I guess you could say I am somewhat of a "germophobe" but I dont care. I think it pays to be this day and time.

I also hate touching certain things in crowded places, such as door knobs, etc. that hundreds of people touch all the time. Money is filthy also. I love it though, I just wash my hands ALOT. Germ-X is a great invention. I use it daily.

Well, i can see why that might gross you out and all but you have to think of it this way......If you are worried about catching something or getting sick then why hasnt every other gotten sick or have something wrong with them. If you are just talking about the fact that its gross cause you have seen food still stuck to the fork after being washed then thats when you ask for a new fork,,,,,i know there are a lot more people at a college than a restaurant but its kind of the same thing, you dont know where its been but you use it anyway.

I'll bet the health department in your city/state has regulations concerning how hot the cafeteria's dishwasher must be in order to sanitize the the eating untensils. When you see ones with stuff stuck on them, of course, don't choose those items. You could bring them to the attention of the cafeteria/food service manager. If there are enough complaints, I'll bet they would do something about it.

Plastic utensils would create a huge amount of garbage. If you think eating from a fork someone else has used is gross, picture great big mounds of garbage that doesn't disintegrate for thousands of years.

Besides, didn't you share the same forks, etc, with your family? Did that bother you?

If it really gets under your skin, just buy your own utensils and use them.Try not to think about it too much. With school, you've got enough to think about. :-)

Seriously, yes, you are crazy. I mean everyone has ridiculous quarks that are completely irrational, so you arent the only one. Are you living in a dorm aka cest pool of filth? The bathroom on your floor has way more "germs" than any caf fork. Even if there is dried food on the fork, more than likely that food is completely sanitized and would be safe (not that I'd use that fork either). If that doesn't satisfy you, steal a set from the caf and keep them as your own, doing your own washing.

Chances of "catching" something from a public utensil that was washed is pretty slim, considering the sanitization process they have to use to wash stuff. Bring a set of silverware from home every day if it makes you feel better. Disposable utensils are harsh on the environment, as they don't degrade for a really long time... so try to stay away from using those.

Actually the dish washers used are very powerful and Hot. If it is a commercial washer a sanitizer is used in the final rinse, and yes some times food sticks but now remember that food has been washed and sanitized! I would get another one or just carry plastic with you to use. In today's world no you are not an idiot and some students may even bring their own also!
Good Luck

Yes, I thinking you are taking this too seriously.

Don't you ever go to restaurants? They use real silverware there. Shouldn't you worry about that too? How do you know they clean their silverware well?

Your using a fork that tons of people have used and probably been dropped on the floor just as many times as in your college cafeteria.

well, i wouldn't go so far as "idiot" but if it helps, think about all the surfaces you come in contact with every day, that other people touch as well. (railings, sinks, bathroom doors, even the dining hall plates/trays!) Germs are everywhere, most are harmless. We need bacteria to live! I took a microbiology class in college and swore I thought I'd be sick afterwards, but it's a fact of life. If forks gross you out...you're going to make yourself nuts. just look for a clean one next time--i guarantee there are more germs in other places you haven't even thought of. i'm pretty sure you can rest easy!

The old saying applies here - to each his own.
If it really bothers you than you have every right to be concerned. Plastic forks are fairly inexpensive and if your college cafeteria doesn't supply them, you can always purchase them yourself and have them handy when you eat out.

Everyone has something that bothers them, that's just normal. Don't listen to other people if they make fun of this but just make sure that you are prepared in the cafeteria with a bag of plastic spoons in your purse so that others don't see you struggling with this issue. If it isn't much of an issue for you then it won't be for them.
