I'm working for a famous company, and every time I meet new people, they are really glad for me, saying how they admire the company. But the more I work here, the more I got disappointed with the leadership there.

So when talking to people outside, should I tell them what I really think? Normally you don't want to say badly about where you work, as it may make you look bad.

NO, and get a grip, if something is wrong, CHANGE IT, if the leadership is disappointing, MAKE IT KNOWN, little waves lead to bigger waves, you may loose your job, but hey, I don't think you are happy there, but maybe, someone will listen!

It's not what you do - it's how you do it. If you are confident in your own views, but also loyal to your employer, you should always preface your remarks with a comment about the good things. So say something like "The good things about working for XXXX are..., but I was surprised to find that...".

I worked for a global multinational for more than 30 years. I argued internally that things should change in some areas. But outside of the corporate environment I was mostly supportive. Since those days the corporation I worked through has slipped into the mire - and I am a sometimes fierce critic.

Always express your concerns internally first - but don't feel that there is a Bond of honour or secrecy that restricts you from being critical when you are with your Friends,. But (as I said) always find something positive to say first.

Public perception can be very different from reality. You should not bad mouth your company in public. It's a very small world and if word gets to your boss that you are saying negative things about the company, there could be repercussions for you.
Just smile and agree. (Unless of course you are with your close friends and relatives and need to vent.)

My husband used to work for a renowned American company. But they treated their employees like crap. Even CHARGING them and their spouses to attend the christmas party. F that!

If I were you, when people comment on the company, I would say "yes they have a very positive public reputation."
