The first thing that comes to my mind is: shoulder. My shoulder hurt so bad, all of the time. My doctor gave me exercises. It hurt to do them. I did not want to pay for an MRI at that time (too expensive). I went to a massage therapist and after three massages, my shoulder stopped hurting. I could raise my arm above my head again.

I realize that if I had a tear or a serious problem in my shoulder, the massage would have made it feel better, but would not have helped it. I was lucky and relieved. I am relieved because it means there is no tear, so no expensive tests need. My doctor agrees with this.

Health conscious, new-ager!
(which isn't a bad thing)
Massage therapy is an excellent therapy. It has many uses and a lot of people would benefit from it. Most chiropractors now have a massage therapist on their staff. A lot of people see them for sports injuries or workout mishaps. for most, it would definitely help with relaxation.
A massage therapist is a far cry from what used to be called a "masseuse" Massage therapists have to go to a legitimate program and learn anatomy and physiology as well as professionalism and business skills. So it's definitely a legitimate field, and definitely a field that will continue to grow.

depends on the state of your mind.... if you live in Asia as l do then you see it as a great way to get the tension out of your body etc. If you have a dirty mind (or dirty intentions) then l guess you think of the 'extras' that some seedy places offer.
