Why is there such a shortage of bone marrow donors, particularly men?

All good answers but no-one's addressed the issue that it's primarily a shortage of MALE donors. Is there a reason why they might be less well-informed and/or more reluctant? I'm not criticising men. I'm just interested in possible reasons.

I am a male, and have never been asked to donate bone marrow. I gave blood twice a year for 25 years (I had to stop because I am now hypertensive). My will donates every bit of my body to medical research or transplant, and I am on the NHS Organ Donor register. Therefore I would consider giving bone marrow if it would save or improve a life.

If this stuff is needed, then the Health Authorities should mount a publicity campaign for donors. It really isn't something that enters my thoughts very much, hence I have not volunteered. But I am there if the stuff is asked for!

It involves an operation for removing the bone marrow. Secondly the donor is scared about the possible after effects of such removal. In any case, there is a time lag for its regeneration.

i'd imagine you'd be eligible yet you ought to do a touch study first. you also want to note that being a bone marrow donor is an really painful technique. this is in evaluation to really donating blood. you'll probable want to have a actual first. and also you actually want to get some more desirable counsel before you're making a call about it.

I would say probably lack of information. Being a regular blood donor I heard about the Red Cross registry for bone marrow donors. If it wouldn't have been for this I probably never would have heard anything about it.

I think there is a shortage of donars around the world full stop. But in saying that, I wouldnt have given it a thought if my child had not been diagnosed with leukeamia last year. Maybe more advertising on the subject. So I think its a lack of knowledge on all parts, donating is a simple proceedure. We also need more blood donars, it really does save lives. Blood donations have saved my child and other like her a million times over.
