I am looking to purchase an xlt with the 5.4 engine (i think this is the standard size). Is there a way to tell if it has the upgraded towing package, which I think includes a different rear axle?

Thanks

Click on the above link, this is the 28 page trailer towing guide for all 2005 Fords.
You are right, the 5.4 Triton V8 is standard.
& there was 2 different axle ratios available (3.73 & 3.31)
See page 20 of the guide provided.
I'm assuming it's a 4X4, in which case you have a 3.73 rear end & can tow up to 6000 lb. with or without Heavy Duty TrailerTow package. Do you need more ?

If so, HDTT package brings you up to 8600 lb. See page 14 for content.
hope this helps.

The upgraded towing package usually comes with the following:

-Brake distributor (usually some unit mounted in the car so you can work the brakes on a big trailer

-Oil cooling unit under the hood

-Radiator upgrade kit to keep the engine cooler when working hard.

-Also you can look at the hitch itself. Is if a simple small bolt on unit or does it look heavy duty.

If you are looking for a 4 cylinder (the best for mileage) I'd go with a Honda CRV. They come in 4wd and a tow package is available. They hold their value well and are very reliable. To check fuel economy on any year and make and to compare vehicle side by side use www.fueleconomy.gov
