It would help to know what pagan religions they practiced. In a very small percentage, occasional sex rites occur but it isn't forced and one should not be dishonest about it. In the vast majority of pagan religions sex rites are not done. So, I think they were probably making it up. Did they inform you about their practices when you first started to get serious with them or did they just use that reason after the deed was done? Did they tell you beforehand or did they only speak up when they got caught?
I have followed pagan paths for a few decades and I have never been unfaithful---or even came close to considering it. In fact I have never even met anyone who was unfaithful to their partner because of their religion.

They were certainly not speaking for me, and I'm a Pagan.
It sounds to me like one of a couple things were in effect here:
1. They were lying about why they were doing what they were doing
2. They belonged to some group that actually did teach that in order to accomplish something or other they had to have sex with certain people - want to lay bets on those "certain people" being the leaders of the group???
But, did they tell you that they would be sexually faithful to you? If there was no agreement about that, it wasn't "cheating". Were they open about being sexual with other people?

It is true that Pagans do not, by and large, have the idea that sex is unwholesome or sinful or bad or just for procreation.
But I'd say that this is a VERY rare thing, what you describe.
And as far as I know, it's not a *requirement* to be sexual with a variety of partners in Paganism, generally. .

Never heard that it was a requirement. Pagans view sex just as anyone else. Some are monogamous, some aren't. They just don't have some restrictions on sex like some other religions. Mostly about pre-marital sex. I don't know any that advocate open marriages and cheating, but those that are inclined will do so, like anyone else. (seems that would fall under the harm non clause in the Wiccan rede for them - cheating does hurt the significant other) I've know a lot of cheating Christians too.

I would say they were using it as an excuse.
I have never come across any Pagan practice or religion that states it is REQUIRED to have sex with members of their group. Sex is never enforced in most covens, unless they were 'Frostie' Wiccans, but even then, it should not be used as an excuse, and they should have told you before hand if they were into that sort of thing.

They were probably making it up, or else they were very misguided.
I personally don't know of any qualified group that requires sex for anything. I have heard horror stories where some loony sets himself up as a "High Priest" and makes up rules where the females have to submit to a "Great Rite" of having sex with him.
These are cults and not true pagan groups.
True pagans would not make sex a requirement for anything because it interferes with the free will of others. It's not ethical behavior.

though i do not practice sexual activity during rituals, there are some who do. NO religion that I know of DEMANDS you to have sex and definately not with specific people.
personally, i think they saw something they wanted, went for it, and then claimed it was a religion thing so they could get by with it.

Pagan women can be and usually are monogamous. I wouldn't believe them for a second. If their groups are expressly "tantric", using sex as a way to connect with the Divine, they may have a point, but otherwise they're either being mislead or are trying to mislead you.

A non-trivial percentage of Pagans believe in polyamory - though it's certainly not a requirement, not exactly what I'd call common, and certainly doesn't involve lying/cheating.
Some traditions do involve sexual activity between certain members, though most of the time (from my understanding) it's between mated pairs, in the context of a reliationship.

There is no single Pagan religion. It's like Jews calling everybody else goyim or Muslims calling everybody else infidels. This is one place I'll give Muslims credit - infidel really does capture the judgemental and pejorative nature of that word that most religions have for "others".
