It could be something simple like the neutral safety switch, or the transmission shifter linkage. You do not say if it is a stick shift or automatic. If it is an automatic, try to start it in neutral rather than in park. If it will start in neutral, your shifter linkage is out of adjustment. You may have to move the gear shift around a bit to try to get it to start.

With a stick shift, check the safety switch on the clutch pedal.

It sounds like the rod going from the key mechanism to the ignition switch is out of adjustment. There are slots on the ign. switch so you can loosen the screws and move it a little. You may want to check though, there may have been a recall on that switch. There was on mine (it's a '91). When I finally pulled it out (since I kept putting off getting the recall taken care of) the metal tabs had straightened allowing the switch to start separating and lose connection. I pushed it back together, making sure everything lined up, and bent the tabs back over. Hope this helps and Merry Christmas!!!

If you have tilt wheel the actuator is broken that moves the ign. switch. Its a 3 inch lever and it breaks, that's if you have tilt wheel
