Thanks for your answers so far, the 7year old isnt really a problem, there is lots of stuff for her to do really it is just my little one i am more concerned about. She wont really understand why we are in the car for so long. We plan to stop at least 2/3 times

sing songs
play music
get the little "travel sized" Magna Doodles for them to draw with
pack snacks
tell stories - either make some up or tell familiar stories like Goldilocks
7 year old can read in the car
small coloring books and crayons or puzzle books for older child
play "I spy"
practice rhyming words with older child - you say "hat" and he says "cat" etc.

plan to stop a couple of times for bathroom breaks and to walk around - if it's a 6-7 hour drive, allow at least 8 hours to get there

if you can affoard it, it may be worth it to buy a potable dvd player for the car. as a far as games go the you could try playing travel bigno, I spy, my son ( 3 ) has a leapster game system we play that when we drive to our cottage, books, colouring books and crayons . . . hope this helps!

For Christmas buy them a portable DVD player. Then, get some of their favorite movies for them to watch. Get 2 pairs of earphones so you don't have to hear it. Works every time.
