Hand hurt and swelled up. Had xrays done, which showed no broken bones or fractures. Swelling and pain have significantly reduced. Now, I have pain when gripping and/or pushing fingers from side to side. I notice a a slight bump in the center of the pain (which is about 1 1/2 inches from the wrist in line with the ring finger. Pressure on that spot also hurts. Waiting to go to a specialist but need xrays from GP. IN meantime, does anyone know anything or have experience with similar symptoms?

You have the symptoms of a boxers fracture. A boxers fracture is a type of break which occurs over the 4th and or 5th metacarpals ( the hand bones that line up with your ring and pinky fingers). Pain and swelling are the usual results of a broken bone. (breaks, cracks and fractures are the same thing in medicine). The break may not be seen all the time, but the treatment remains the same.

You'll need to immobilize your wrist. An ulnar gutter splint is a type of splint that's U shaped and goes on the under side of your arm from the middle of your 5th finger to the middle of your arm. Its worn for about 6 weeks. They also have velcro splints that do the same thing and little more comfortable to wear.

On a side note, I've studied martial arts and the proper way to punch is to focus your energy over your first two knuckles. They are the two strongest points in a fist, the bones are aligned with your hand, wrist and arm and so the likliness of injury is significantly less.

Are you really sure there is no fracture in your hand? Looks like there is. Go see an orthopedist at once.
