The virgin Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico and it's peoples.
Mexicans have a very strong connection with religion as 90% of the population is deeply roman catholic. It has quite a bit more to do with a person than simply being a good luck charm.

So, let me get this straight. You know of one or a couple of Mexican gang members that have worn t-shirts with the Virgin Mary on them and this means that all Mexican gang members wear them?
Your logic is amazing.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very important religious icon in Mexico and here among hispanics. She appeared in Guadalupe to a man named Jose (if I recall right) and she is the only apperition in Mexico.
She is as important as Our Lady of Fatima is in Fatima, or Our Lady of Mnt. Caramel is to Carmelite nuns. The Virgin Mary has many titles.

It's no different then Gwen Stefani wearing a Our Lady of Guadelupe shirt, that she cut down the middle to expose some of her "dirty pillows" in a video. People are dillusional about what is right and wrong in God's eye. No matter how deeply religious they are, we catholics are to wear these shirts, or jewelry to remind us of God and His love. They either forgot, or was not taught, or they don't care. We need to pray for a solution.

Many Latinos are very religious. The Virgin Mary is highly regarded as a 'divine mother', and like most mothers, she is protective.
