Lumos is Latin for "glow", or "light" as in "Lumos Dissendium"... The light is lit. It's the basis on which the word "luminisence" is made.

It's a made up word, comes probably from Latin, like 'luminous' , 'illumination' or 'lumen' - to do with light.
