A stye (also spelled sty) is a very common and sometimes contagious, pus-filled swelling near eyelash roots, often caused by bacterial infection.

Also known as hordeolums, styes can be caused by different factors such as blocked or infected eyelid glands or inflammation of eyelids. Contaminated fingers that touch the eye area also can cause infection.

Painful styes also can occur internally within eyelids, usually in association with a blocked gland that provides lubrication for the eyelid.

It is the fluid in your eyes that is infected. Nothing serious, body will take care of it. Sty comes and goes. In some people it is so much of an infection that the eyelid stays shut and they need to be opened with a good clean wash.

Don't be alarmed. Just good hygiene and frequent wash with your disinfectant eye-solution available in your local pharmacy should take care of it. If you are in a dusty environment that can happen too, especially when you get up after a long sleep.

With eyes staying closed when you sleep, the warm, moist, dark environment is a good place for the bacteria to grow. This is why you observe sty in the mornings when you get up.

Other than being an embarassment, it is common in many people. Be aware and make frequent visits to the bathroom to keep your eyes clean with the solution you bought. It will go away in about a week if you keep them clean.

Its an infection in your eyes called conjunctivitis. You need an antibiotic ointment to clear it up. You get it if you have touched something or someone that is contaminated with the germ, and then touch your eyes.
