For that matter, if there's something better after this life, why is there this life in the first place?

Because our culture has ingrained the idea into us that there isn't anything better, and we believe that. Plus not all have the same instinct. A parent will have a strong instinct to make sure the children are safe, but if/she knows they are safe if it means their own end, they'll gladly take that. People who commit suicide don't seem to have that instinct as strongly. It depends on how much each person feels they have to live for. Plus, our biological body is trained in quick instances to stay alive-has little to do with a better life, our own body has a life and methods of its own to survive.

Because there is NOT something better after death for many.

"It has been appointed to every man, once to die and then the judgment."

Where will you be on judgment day? It may not be better for you,to the contrary, it could get much worse.

The only Heaven some people will see is a glimpse they have of it while they are here on earth. The only Hell some will see is the what they see here on earth because they have been washed of their sins, redeemed and have the promise of eternal life in Heaven.

Jesus paid the price for those who call on Him for salvation. Those who trust in Him will see a better life after this one, those who have not will see nothing but hell for all eternity.

As a Christian, I love life and want to make the best of this time on earth, so I want to survive. But I know that life will be much better when I leave this world.

Also why do people who profess to believe that "heaven is a much better place" cry forever and anguish over loved ones that die. Because deep down, I think most people recognize that established religions are all bogus, made up by man. We should live out our lives to the fullest possible, and enjoy them, it is the only life we have, there is no afterlife--we are no better than any other mammal, reptile or insect--just more intelligent. That doesn't make us special.

If you're living for the Lord and His purpose for your life there is no need for you to be in survival mode--Our walk on this earth is just like that of Jesus--a test--a chance for us to choose-either death or life--and if you are truly in a personal relationship with Christ you are certain of a wonderful place for your eternity. I think it's funny how people who have never run to the Savior can be so DEAD against it. Don't knock Him until you've tried Him. I used to be just like some of you until I found that there is nobody who will ever love us like the heavenly Father.

there is not necessarily something BETTER after death...but there is an afterlife.....

the survival instinct is seen even in animals..and is seen as "the preservation of the species." this may be seen as a drive that is independent of what comes next....

however, in man, there is the subconscious concern about what DOES happen next....and so there is the need to hang onto this life until they feel peace about the next one.

also, even with a sence of peace about the next life, people think of their loved ones and do not want to leave them.

Fear of the unknown certainly comes into play...and we really don't know what happens at death, do we...unless you're a religious leader type and you feel the need to keep the limo fueled by using that charisma to lead a flock along your belief.

Our instinct to survive has increased our population levels but not reduced our fear of death.

I believe only Christians have the promise of life after death. The Christians will know that God have a divine purpose for each of them to fulfil on this earth and God will give them long and satisfying lives to achieve it and earn their rewards in heaven. Christians have strong desires to live to the full their abundant and fruitful lives on earth. God give them good deals and they can enjoy serving God from the position of rest that God give them. Life for the true Christian who can enjoy the fullness of God's blessings and anointings on his life finds living life on earth as good as living in heaven. In fact there are more challenges that he can overcome here on earth by resting in God.
