salaam
I think the real question is:If David was a man of God, why would he go kill palestines, cut of their foreskins and pay it as a bride price? This just looks like David wanted to prove how macho he is.
Even if the palestines were Israel enemies. Was David's crusade justified? Did he act in defense or did he just march up and went ballistic?
David should never had obliged to act like this. How is this pleasing to God?
May God forgive me of thinking bout David(a.s) so bad(right now).

24 When Saul's servants told him what David had said, 25 Saul replied, "Say to David, 'The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.' " Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines.
26 When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king's son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed, 27 David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, 29 Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.
It was a trap to kill David. This is after several attempts on David's life. Saul believed that David would die at the hands of the Phillistines or turn down the price that he was asked to pay. Don't forget, David was choosen by God to be the next king, and Saul didn't want to give up his throne.

You question is why..... because that is what Saul asked for. David had already been promised a daughter of Saul and she was given to another. David would have brought Saul whatever he asked for to get Michal for his wife.
It was a way to ensure that the people being killed were not of the house of Israel and that they were male. The Philistines were a thorn in the flesh of Israel as they had not been eliminated during the original occupation--partially because they were so big and difficult to fight. Goliath was a Philistine. David did above and beyond the request to show how sincere he was and that he was valiant.
Nice to see someone reading the out of the way passages instead of just the usual 10 historical accounts in the Bible.

If you read the entire chapter you will see that Saul hated David and was jealous of him. He sent him to the Philistines as a snare a trap hoping the Philistines would kill him. Saul was in a rage over the women of Israel singing and dancing and saying Saul has slain his thousands but David his ten thousands. VS ( From that day forward Saul eyed David) VS.11 He throws a javelin at David twice VS.12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him and had departed from Saul. Saul had turn away from God and was Afraid of David. He was really hoping the Philistines would kill him that is why he asked for the foreskins.
In 1 Samuel 24 you can read where David could of killed Saul but spared his life.
In chapter 26 Saul confesses and repents vs. 21-25
Sometimes we have to read the whole BOOK to understand what it means.
Thanks.

I don't exactly understand the point of your question, seeing that you've already answered it.
He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage...it was the price he had to pay because he had no money, possessions like cattle etc to present to the father of his future bride.
But here's the angle...what Saul intended for bad that David would be killed by the Philistines, God turned around into a victory against His enemies (the Philistines hated the God of Israel) while protecting David whom He loved, as well as giving David favor in the ranks and army of Israel, preparing the way for him to take his rightfull place as king of Israel.

As you've quoted, the Philistines were fierce enemies of Israel. Saul never believed David could kill 100 men, so he thought the "price" was unobtainable. David doubled the "bride price" and offered two hundred to prove his bravery and worthiness to marry the King's daughter.
Yes, this is an odd story to us today, but I've read weirder stories in the newspapers, I guess.

sir, you have to understand that the phil estine gang were mortal enemies of the children of ISRAEL.when u look at all these men did to israel, you would feel like the U>S>A> did after Pearl Harbor. it was that bad... and the philistines didn't give up. they ahd killed 1000's of innocent israeli women and children before that..they didn't want the nation to live.. so Saul wanted David dead because GOD had annointed or appointed David to replace him as King of Israel. so he hated him and was jealous. u know the funny thing, David wouldn't kill saul. he had multiple chances .. He wouldn't kill the LORD'S anointed.. because Saul was annointed before him.

Yes, there are some crazy stories in the bible and alot of them seem to be of immoral behavior.
Why God chooses a person that he loves is a mystery. I also beleive that alot of the Old testament has so little documentation and witness writers that it pales in comparision to the well documented, witnessed timeframe when Jesus walked the earth.
It raises questions inside my head as to the worth of these old testament stories and their validity and worth in our lives when compared to Jesus life, where my heart seems to be drawn to and resonates towards.
Sometimes I wonder if some of the old testament should have been part of the bible at all. It doesnt compare to the kindness and love that Jesus shows the world.

probable reasons
1. saul did ask for the forskins to begin with....david just provided more than was asked
2. the philstines were enemies of Israel, and were considered nephilium, or giants that were the result of devils mating with human women.... so the more dead, the better....

Most of these answers start from the point of view that the biblical accounts are actual history. Modern archaeology and biblical scholarship along with common sense are showing that much of these ancient traditions are folkloric in nature and must be regarded as such. The problem is that these ancient and often misguided folktales define deity in terms that are no longer suitable for the spiritual needs of the twenty first century.
