My music teacher likes to drink merlot. I'd like to get her a bottle for Christmas. I am looking to spend anywhere for $20 to $30. Can you suggest a good Merlot for her? Thank you!

2003 Franciscan Merlot, Oakville Estate, Napa Valley .. Runs about $22 per bottle. Really good stuff!

Also, Smoking Loon Merlot is very good and is only like $15 per bottle.

Kathy H has already given you a list of great Merlot. But I noticed an interesting one recently it's called Norma Jean, produced by the same winery as the famous Marilyn Merlot but less than half price. The label states it is a young Merlot, should be an interesting drink. I can't imagine that they would directly relate a bad wine with their legendary Merlot.

I would recommend any of the following Merlot. They are all great wines.

Casa Lapostolle 2004 Cuvee Alexandre Merlot - $19.99
Columbia Crest 2003 Grand Estates Merlot - $14.99
Hogue 2003 Genesis Merlot - $16.99

Grab the latest issue of food + Wine magazine and right there in the front it gives you a list of (mostly) readily available wines with prices. They only put good stuff in there. If you want I can look in mine this afternoon and tell you what they suggest.
