There are many different studies on this subject.

Let's take coffee first, since there are only two basic types. Caffinated and Decaffinated. Decaffinated coffee is fine if they used a water decaffinating system. No chemicals. There are mixed studies of caffinated coffee. Some studies suggest that having coffee in moderation ( about 1 cup a day ) is healthful in preventing some cancers. Of course anything in excess is not a wise decision. Caffine in a stimulate ( which is why we drink it in th first place ) and too much could lead to heart palpitations, pupil constriction and other side effects.

When talking about tea, there are many different types. Black tea has the highest concentration of caffine, white tea is the same plant as black tea, but, has a much lower amount of caffine because it only uses leaf buds. Some herbal teas aren't really teas at all because they are flower and plant parts and not leaves. Most herbal teas are decaffinated because the plants used don't have caffine, but, they may have other volitile chemicals that have other side effects.

One the whole, black tea is considered a healthful drink because it is high in antioxidants. These are chemicals that bind to free ions in the bloodstream, rendering them inert. Herbal teas are also considered healthful, depending on the condition that you need to treat. Most pharmocologists and pharmacists would disagree with using herbal preparations because they effective dosage is too low to be useful.

Although not an MD, I am a PhD with a lot of training in Biochemistry and biology so I have seen a lot of this research.
Recent studies have shown that coffee, even in substantial doses, does not seem to have any real negative effects on health. Huge doses (>5 cups a day), however, can cause problems especially for those with heart or nervous system problems, but if you do not have those problems even that is not a serious issue.
Tea especially is a diuretic and can lead to dehydration if water intake is also not increased. This is only a problem if you do not drink enough fluids (especially just plain water).
Large doses of caffeine can lead to restlessness, irritability, racing heartbeat and muscle twitching. People do because accustomed to it though, and over time the effects are diminished.
Breaking a caffeine addiction takes about 2 weeks. Day 1 isn't a problem really, but days 2-5 especially are loaded with headaches. Painkillers like ibuprofen only help a little.
If you are planning to break the addiction I would recommend you make day 1 a Thursday. Friday won't be THAT bad, but Sat and Sun you will probably just want to lay around. By Monday it will have begun to subside and by the end of the week you should be mostly OK.
Bottom line: Drinking them in moderation doesn't seem to really have any serious positive or negative effects, other than the sleep/wake effects which you (supposedly) control.

Hope this helps.

I read an article a couple of months ago from a well known health site that said that they have discovered that Coffee, as much as 3 cups a day is good for you and tea as well, but they don't suggest more than this. It is supposed to have certain agents in it that is good for the heart and blood circulation, but like some of the other answers you received, too much of anything is not good. Use moderation with anything. Not a doctor, but have done a lot of reading and studying on a multitude of web sites.

I drink over one pot of coffee aday.
It neither affects my behavior or my sleep.
My doctor told me that I was OK to drink 64oz of coffee a day and anything over that I should mix regular coffee with naturally decafinated coffee but gave me no reason why nor did I think to ask.
Generally speaking, though my Dr has OK'd my coffee consumption I know for a fact that it is a diuretic which means it will make me pee more and when I pee more I lose water from my body that my body needs.
I also know that the caffeine in the coffee though I can't tell that it affects me much does infact speed up one's heart.
All in all though I drink alot of coffee and my Dr said it was OK,I know that for the above reasons I really should cut my consumption down to no more than 3 cups of coffee a day and since I have noticed that I smoke more cigarettes when I drink coffee,I am sure that if I cut out coffee drinking altogether I would probably be saving my lungs in the long run.
You address your question to Dr's only but even if someone who is a Dr answers your question you will find that most all Dr's have differing opinions on this as on alot of things.

Tea causing dehydration is actually a myth. Tea does in fact hydrate, but has diuretic properties which lead you to urinate more frequently. Studies have also shown that tea can actually help prevent certain cancers.

As for coffee, one of the plus sides is that coffee can help combat the harmful effects of alcohol. The british journal of hepatology carries a paper which shows that a couple of cups of coffee decreases the effects of alcohol.

The Caffine in both Tea and Coffee has dehydration properties, so drinking 3-4 cups a day can lower your hydration. Drinking plently of water will combat this.

Obviously adding sugar or sweetner to it will damage your teeth and the drink itself can stain your teeth.

Don't listen to that rubbish advice about everything is fine in moderation, try drinking just 1 cup of bleech and see where it gets you!!

I'm not a doctor, but a med student.

Tea will impair the uptake of iron in your intestines, but it is good for you in moderation, try not to drink it at meal time though. There is an interesting article about the de-stressing qualities of tea at http://www.emedicinehealth.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=76689

Drinking excessive amounts of coffee will dull your ability to learn, even though it keeps you awake. Too much caffeine can also cause palpitations, tremor and diarrhoea in some people. Caffeine is also a diuretic. If you're pregnant try to avoid caffeine. But if not pregnant, it's okay in moderation.

Wikipedia has a good article about caffeine, it's effect on the body and how much is necessary for caffeine intoxication.

I'm not a doctor but everything is OK in moderation. Both drinks have caffiene in them so there is various health issues related to that but I have heard that drinking several cups of tea a day is good for the circulation and helps keep certain cancers at bay.
