Meth is probably the most addictive and destructive drug out there. One hit and you're addicted. There is no casual meth use. It is a potent form of "speed" and it causes the release of dopamine in the brain which increases feelings of pleasure. After time, the body compensates by closing down some of the dopamine receptors in the brain thus causing the person to have to do more meth more often to achieve the same high. Meth also destroys your teeth because: a) you'd rather buy drugs than brush your teeth and b) the ingredients of meth are very caustic. Meth is also responsible for putting both the makers of the drug and the innocent bystanders in the burn units of hospitals because of the volatility of the chemicals when making it. Curing meth addiction is very difficult. I believe the recidivism rate is like 80% or so because the pull of meth is so strong. Addiction is definitely not only in the mind for meth.

There is no one thing which is the most addicting for all. Each person varies with addiction. Many people are addicted to alcohol while others have no desire for it. Many people are addicted to sweets while again, others are not. And so on. Alcohol causes a more widely addiction because it's easily accessible. Someone mentioned sugar, which is another example, it's widely accessible. If other drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin, etc were legal and more accessible, most likely they would be in the top categories of addiction.
Most addictions are caused by achieving the first "high" encountered with the substance. First timers intake a substance and reach a high they've never had before. That high will NEVER again be reached, but they try anyway. Thus leading to increased amounts as well as different substances. Then the addiction starts.
I believe addiction falls within the mental aptitude. Discipline and will power is required to overcome any obstacles which we encounter in life. Many people would rather find excuses for their problems or would rather blame another. If they used the energy involved from supporting their addiction, blaming others and other excuses to discipling themselves, they would overcome their addiction.

It depends on the person. Some people are addicted to coffee, some to chocolates... Lately I've been addicted to Parmesan cheese.

Addicts usually substitute one thing for another...
Be it alcohol, nicotine,pot,meth,sugar,sex...etc.
In my opinion, most addicts feel something is "wrong" with them, and are trying to self-medicate.
Addiction starts "of the mind"...
can end up being physical.
