Hi there...consider using a combination of loosely crumpled foil sheets and double-sided sticky tape to prevent counter surfing or on any other surfaces when you are not available to visually supervise your kitty's undesirable behaviour. Cats dislike having their paws stuck to the tape and the noise the foil makes when landing on it. After after a few attempts cats learn to avoid areas which are unpleasant. Citrus will work for some cats, however many generally will jump up and walk around them.

There are some gadgets in the market for shooing away the cat from many things but these are rather costly and there is no knowing when an intelligent will know how to go round them.
I found that the best wa to keep my cat of the kitchen when I am asleep is to lock up the kitchen door(and also window).Didn't cost me much except a latch.

You need to make it a negative experience when you catch them. Spray them in the face with a water bottle mister or shake a can with a few pennies in the bottom. Don't leave food out and make sure the counter is clean clean....spray it down with bleach or water and vinegar...so they are not attracted to it by scent.
The longer they find nothing up there, and the more negative the idea of getting sprayed, the better they will stay down when you are not around.
You could even get one of those timed mist air fresheners that spray every so many minutes. The cats will hear it and they dont care for that sound and may connect it to the water bottle! Just spray your counters clean.

Cats are wild and they still have some wild in them so they like to climb.
Try putting sticky stuff on the table and then they wont want to be up their anymore but this may cause a problem with ants but this is the only way unless you want to put ur cat in a cage at night.
Or ask a vet

I recently saw a question about keeping cats away from the Christmas Tree, and the very helpful advice given was orange peels. Cats do not care for the smell and stay away from the area..I now have orange peels hidden within the lower branches of my tree, and the cats have lost interest.
I also have a bowl of oranges and nuts on my coffee table, and they stay away from trying to climb on top of it as well.

many of the responses on this page should work..the big secret is for you to find the one the cat hates the most and persevere..don't give up..............my cat hates having a bath but will stand up against the wall in the tub while i give her a shower, that is pretty darn cute(she looks like a criminal getting searched by a cop)... this same cat will come running if i call out loud "where's my cat". she will also roll over on command ....i'm gentle and stubborn while training her.. key word persevere

There is a non toxic spray at the pet store that cats and dogs hate the smell of. spray a little on the counter for a few days and it should work. I am sorry I don't remember the name of it.

i don't know how you would go about doing that. cats are sneaky and if they want to do something, they're going to do it. but it would be wonderful if you could! think about it, when they get into the litter box, they step in there own feces and urine. then get on your kitchen counters, tables, couches. OOoooo, i can't stand the thought of that. we just had to discuss this with a family memeber, he is in really bad health, has 4 cats, and 4 litter boxes just scattered around his house. and he never picks up after his animals. among other things. good luck, i hope you can find a solution. i'll be checking up on your post to see if anyone has any ideas, maybe we can suggest something to our family member....
