Having worked for both chain pubs and those privately owned, in the chain pubs unless you are of management level they tend not to give staff incentives for performance, i.e. £50 in hand for most through that person's account on the balance fron the tills at the end of the night. So as a result staff only get basic pay which is rubbish ergo nae service.
Another thing is the margins they set the managers does not allow them to put on the required volume of staff needed ergo nae service
Privately owned pubs, realise the value of good staff and pay them accordingly, from personal experience, what I was paid as a bar manager 6 years ago in a private pub is STILL above that of those in many chain establishments.
It really should be simple for the likes of Scottish Courage, Wetherspoons and the like, that if you pay people properly for the abuse they take then you get the service, and if they don't then someone else will be there to take their place. As it is there is always a dearth of good staff in chain pubs and the service will always be poor, until those in charge realise that people have more "luxury" money to spend, and if they marketed themselves properly they could tap into this market very successfully.

Yes - they don't employ enough staff. I've lost count of the number of times I've walked out of a Wetherspoons as there was no prospect of me being served in a reasonable timespan. I know they're cheap but I'd pay a few pence extra for some more staff.

Service atrocious.
Food crap-always cold when it eventually reaches you.
Staff rude and inconsiderate.
Always running out of the beer that you want.
Never have enough staff to serve the customers.

They are the drinks industry equivalent of the" No Frills range"

Yes, because Wetherspoons tend to have very long bars with 2 people working on them at peak times.

But then, that is why the beer is so cheap.

Oh yes!!! It takes forever if you are a woman.. why do they seem to serve the men first. My money is as good as theirs, perhaps as I am only 5 feet tall they cant see me over the bar!

Because their beer etc is cheaper than anywhere else this means that they are more popular. Therefore it takes longer to be served
