You can not make such a generalization.There can be some examples of this situation in Turkey because of certain traditional practices of different groups.But, these practices can exist today because of the patriarchal structure that can be seen in many different societies and because of the subordination of women throughout the world.These lead men to see women as their "honour" and try to control their sexual life.

It goes wwwwaaaaayyyy back...at least before dna testing for paternity...a man can't prove a child is his, whereas, a woman always can (after all, it came out of her), so, to keep a woman from wandering and getting knocked up by someone with superior genes, they threaten the women with death. Because, after all, if a woman could choose the father of her baby based upon genes, and not who their parents' decided to give her to for a lamb and a goat, where would most of the children come from? Most men wouldn't even get laid. It also puts the man's mind to rest as to the paternity of the children he is raising. I don't agree with it and think it's barbarack...especially in cases of rape where the woman is still killed, usually by a memeber of her immediate family for bringing shame upon them.
