Cats can be neutered/spayed already as kittens, at the earliest at the age of 6 weeks. It is an easy procedure and in my experience much easier for the animal than a later operation.
It is not necessary to wait until they go into heat. Talk to your vet about it.

Definitely spay a cat before the first heat, if you want to eliminate/greatly reduce the possibility of uterine, ovarian, and breast cancer.
Definitely spay before 6 months and certainly before a year!
A cat can be spayed by 6 weeks or when she reaches 2 pounds.

Talk with your vet.

It can be done at 8 weeks if the kitten is healthy and the vet knows what they're doing. They bounce back so quickly from early spay that you wouldn't believe it. A lot of the vets still wait until 6 months, but I'd rather not deal with the possibility of her going into heat first. That's a royal pain in the behind to deal with.

Thanks for spaying!!!!

really its more an issue of weight rather than age. your kitten has to be at least 4 pounds to handle the anesthesia. I had my kitten neutered at around 3 months. He was a little tired the day of the surgery, but the next day he was right back to his hyper self. there is no reason not to spay early if your vet knows what they are doing. and NO they do not have to be 6 months old!

Normally a cat should not be nuetered until it is six months old.
This is so that it has reached a reasonable size and has the strength to undergo the anasthetic. Also for males the testes have dropped at this time and it malkes it easier to do the castration. Cats neatered too early have been known to grow quite large and carry too much weight so making a very un fit cat.

Around 6 months. Watch it's behaviour before that, especially if it's a female - a female kitten can become pregnant earlier.

My vet said 6 months for a boy kitten and a year for a girl kitten.
