I just read this morning that it is actually an old archery term which means to "miss the mark". That makes perfect sense from a Christian perspective.
The "mark" that Paul speaks about is the "high calling of Christ."
In other words, to live a perfect, sinless life. To love God with ALL your heart, and to love your neighbor as yourself." (Jesus said that sums up the 10 commandments, which were God's perfect law.)
If we cannot say that has been the case with us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for our entire life, then we have sinned.
Romans 3:23...the wages for sin is death...BUT the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ, his son.
At least at this point on my Christian walk, this is how I define sin.

9. Allah can forgive the sin everytime you commit it so long as you truly repent.
10. Repentence from a sinpurifies you so long as you honestly try hard not to commit it again; even if you fail, Allah forgives.
Allah says in the Holy Quran: 'O Ibadi (my slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful".
Done my homework; 10 sentences + a verse from te Quran!

In the Old Testament, sin is simply disobedience to god - it is "missing the mark" (st by God for us to achieve).
The Hebrew word most often translated as “sin” is chata, which has the basic meaning of missing or falling short of a target or norm. The word avon (“iniquity,” “perversity,” “guilt” or “wickedness”) also occurs numerous times. It has a basic meaning of bending or twisting.
In the New Testament, all sin is a positive rebellion against God and a transgression of His standards.
The NT word most frequently used for sin is hamartia, missing the mark. It is the most comprehensive term for explaining sin.
Taking all the data together, I define Sin as a failure to conform to the will or moral law of God.
