With the rain and having to drive home at 3am for 45 miles because of my job I have thought about sleeping in my car. I have spent 160 the past two weeks for a one night stay in a hotel and that has put a hole in my wallet. What are some safe precautions I would need to take? I will be putting my back seats down and sleeping in the trunk and passenger side. I have also considered tinting my windows. Any suggestion would be great. Thanks!

Sleep in the rest area (USA), that is if your doing long drives in the freeway. In California, we have a few rest areas on the freeway. 2 am to 4 am, in my driving experience, that's the time of the most accidents. I drive 40 miles one way to work, but I only worked 3 days a week. You cannot sleep in the parking lot, because police are roaming around and question you (in California). I like driving, and have no problems with distance.

But if I am in your shoes,
I will sleep in the parking lot (a desperate choice, though),
I will rent a room (not a good choice for limited money like me).

Sleeping in the car is my choice. My guess is to lock the car inside. Crack a window open (a little bit), or open the moonroof. Let the time pass by until after 4 am. My reason for that is, after 4 am, our body thinks you have to wake up because it's morning. When I arrived at my home, I can get more sleep. I don't drink coffee at 2 am, it has a negative reaction when you are sleepy. That's what I do.

How do cops and a person like me, know someone is inside the car (any vehicle)? The fog that is inside the glass. Even with tinting the windows, it doesn't help either.

A factory moonroof is a better choice for me. It has a 2 drains, one drains to the front and one drains to the back. You can see holes either under the fender.

Only 45 miles?
Try 2 to 2 1/2 hours (depending on weather) 1/2highway,1/2 country roads on a motorcycle. Start anywhere from 11pm to 2am. And be subject to call in as soon as you get home(which would mean another round trip).

I didn't think it was that bad. I did it for a whole year.
Why take a nap when you can be home in bed?

Park well away from the highway in case of freak accident, lock all doors, don't keep the air conditioning running as the toxic gas may seep into a poorly ventilated interior space and cause gas poisoning and most of all, leave a small gap in the window to avoid suffocation.
