She got her tattoo about 2 weeks ago and the ink is actually peeling off...it's all scabby and the ink is just coming off the skin. She says that it always itches too. What could the problem be?

She probably didn't listen to the tattoo artist. They will always tell you whats going to happen in the healing period. You should never scratch a tattoo even if it itches. When it is scabby and it looks like the ink is fading it really isnt. Its healing. All that scab is probably blood when they were actually doing the tattoo. She needs to clean it with antibacterial soap twice a day and dry it well. You dont want a lot of moisture. Never put p. jelly or anything like that. You want to buy a good antibacterial cream so it won't get infected. After like maybe 3 weeks it well look fine. before it gets better it will look ugly and nasty. Don't worry. Unless she gets a fever or gets very sick, then you should go to the doctor. That could mean that the needles weren't sterilized or something else. Other than that just tell her to have patience.

She should have kept it a little more moisturized, then it wouldn't be peeling as bad.

But that is completely normal. The ink coming off with the scabs should be fine... but DO NOT FORCE the scabs to come off. If you pick at them, you could leave marks in the tattoo, and she will most likely have to have it touched up once it is done healing.

And the itching is normal too... although it might get worse before it gets better.

Be sure you tell her NOT to itch it! Scratching at the tattoo could distort it, and it's not going to look nearly as nice when it heals.

If the itching gets too bad, try slapping the tattoo. I know it sounds strange, but it helps, since you can't scratch it.

The itching will go away in a few days or so, and the tattoo should be completely healed soon, if it's already 2 weeks old. :)

where is the tattoo located at on her body? if it is on the foot or a bony place like that a lot of people's tattoos peel off and what the artist should have told her was that she needed to come back after peeling to get it touched up. if it wasn't in a place like that then the artist did something wrong and he or she should fix it for free.
O yea and her tattoo itches because it is her skin healing. nothing to worry about unless she is itching it so much that it bleeds, then she could be allergic to the ink.

Tattoo Artist Sara: What type of ointment are you using, the best ointment to use is A&D to help it heal better, the problem might be that your not putting any on there or not enough you just need a thin layer of ointment three times a day for two weeks, either that or he dug into your skin and may resulted in scarring. Just remember do not scratch or pick at the tattoo! Normally you'll get a film of scab, thats normal, that actually helps protect the tattoo, but it should of came off since its been two weeks.

when I got my tattoo the ink did come off a little bit with the scabbing and the artist I went to told me that was normal for the first day or two, it also happened to my friend and both of our tattos are now beautiful, Itching is part of the healing process it is very important for her not to itch it and not to pick off the scabs, that will make it scar, she should be washing it about twice a day with antibacterial dial soap and putting lubriderm unscented lotion on it when the skin feels dry. If she is really worried she should go back to the artist, or maybe a different artist, and ask what is wrong and what she should do about it.

Your girlfriend didn't get ripped off. Fresh tattoo's always look ugly and weird.
Don't mess with it, don't pick at it. It will itch, it is healing skin.
The person above said to slap it and that actually works.
I would just leave it alone, put some Curel on it (fragarence & dye free) and wait. If it feels "hot" or starts pussing, not ooze, puss, then it may be infected.
From what you said it doesn't sound like it. Contrary to what a lot of people think, I personally don't believe there is any way to really mess up a tattoo unless you rip it off of your skin or cut it off, once the inks in there it is in there.
P.S. They are just normal scabs, let them just flake off by themselves.

It sounds like she didn't take care of it properly, and it's now getting dry and scabby. I cannot believe all these people saying "Go get your money back"...the artists are not responsible for the stupid things that people do to their tattoos after they leave the shop. She needs to keep it clean, and at this point, keep lotion on it. No scratching. Itching is not a problem, it's normal, and she does not need to see a doctor unless she has signs of infection, the artist will know best how to take care of it. She should be able to call the artist to ask about this. My God, some people...

ur supposed to rub A & D on it about 3 or 4 times a day. Never let it get so dry that it starts to itch. When the tattoo gets too dry, the ink will start to scab off, but it doesn't neccessarily mean that the tattoo will be screwed up. She doesn't need to go to the doctor, they will laugh at her.

DON'T PEEL THE SCABS!!! That's how the ink comes out. It's supposed to scab over. That's the bodies way of helaing. When you pull the scabs, you're pulling the ink out.

And with scabs, they itch. Don't scratch. Put something over it, and just barely rub it, if she can't stand it anymore.

Everything you put up there is totally normal. I have 12, and mine would itch so bad I couldnt' stand it. And the bigger ones would scab over so bad, one of them you couldn't tell it was a tattoo. But the more she scratches and picks the scabs, the more she's going to pull the ink out. Just leave it alone, and let it heal.

Unless it's inflamed (redness, fevers, any sign of infection), then it sounds like the normal healing process. Some skin (and ink) will scab and flake off. The important thing is NOT TO SCRATCH! That will cause scarring and result in a faded, blotchy tattoo. When mine were healing, I just slathered them with lotion to ease the itching.
