First one of my thumbs hurt now they both do. Is this likley the beginning of arthritis or am I somehow damaging myself?

Arthritis can start in any joint. If your pain is directly at the joints in your thumbs, then it is a good bet that is what it is. Usually trying an anti-inflamatory drug helps like Advil, Naprosin. But, to be sure, see a Dr. They could also be sore due to overuse, depending on what you do for work, sports, etc.

arthritis is the deterioration of the lining of a joint I would think you are doing something to make your thumbs hurt

According to my Dr, I have artheritis in one thumb.
