I am sure we will never reallt know what the number is... when we have those people speaking out about rights for illegals, that may have been a small fraction, the numbers we see crossing borders is a small fraction, the numbers we estimate with expiring visas is another small fraction, then there are the ones smuggled in, the ones we never see, that hide under the radar etc... 12 million may just be a conservative estimate.... we will never really know.... not until the laws are tightened or just enforced.... it would give us a better guess, even still we won't know for sure....I don't know why we give that number, or give any number for that fact.... many people just ignore the overall idea.... it's not that we hate illegal people for just people alive pr are being racist.... it's a crime... maybe not a crime like murder or rape.... but it's a crime none the less.... and what are we teaching our children, that any some crimes deserve to be ignored and rewarded.... many legal residents come to the US everyday and work hard to come here legally.... yes it takes years and money, why sugar coat the truth.... immigration is fine is done the correct way....

Why do we even worry about silly laws. I'm sure there would have been plenty of "Illegal" immigrants come into the U.S. back in the days if they had strict immigration laws. Then we wouldn't be having this conversation. How are immigrants from mexico detrimental to the people who worry about them? I've heard things like diseases and drugs (too late for that one, some of the diseases that are here were brought by europeans and the drugs are gonna get here no matter who it is bringing them over)
If you would study some economics immigrants help our gross domestic product a heap. Increased production at lower costs (labor) thus increasing profits, keeping supply up, recessions small (although unavoidable because it is a part of the business cycle). A major percentage of a family's income is spent on consumer items like food and necessities which they buy in the U.S., while the minor "savings" which people cry about leaving the country to relatives back in mexico is paltry in comparison. The U.S. economy also benefits because this is a natural import of cheap human resources. India and China have plenty of cheap labor and then we cry because of our trade deficit. this in turn promotes the old nationalistic "Buy American" which I think has a great effect on people perception of mexican immigrants being evil.
Would you rather have mexican immigrants spend their money in the U.S. or in foreign countries?
Innovation is the key to our economy turning around its trade deficit. Entrepreneurs know this and are faced with a double edged-sword. Yes I can innovate and lower my production costs with cheaper labor yet, because of the outdated protectionist "Buy American" propaganda we have immigration laws that make it illegal. With this new lowered production costs maybe corporations will be more willing to buy capital goods which will have a multiplier effect on the economy.
Why else to you think that we have these laws in place? It isn't because we don't have room for them. Sure make new towns and cities, it'll only help America in the long run. I really hope that one day short-sighted Americans will see this logic and not just be anti-immigrant because it is against the law.

I doubt it's 12 million too. Probably 30 - 40 million as you say.
How many get smuggled into the US everyday?? How many cross the border everyday??
Something needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course there are more than 12 million illegals living here. We won't know the true number until after our government enacts the amnesty program. They are going to grant it again.

it incredibly is poor! And the maximum up-to-date insult to harm is my district's Chris Cannon (R UT-3) has cooked up this "AgJobs" invoice which will grant for tens of millions of *new* "centred visitor workers" and amnesty for tens of millions greater already right here. Insultingly adequate, his homepage is going on approximately retaining the rustic from illegals, blah blah blah. it incredibly is repugnant.

That would be 13 percent of our population. You really think 13% of the US are immigrants? Listen, there is only about 12.5% African Americans living in the US. To say there are more illegal immigrants than Blacks would be silly.

Its more like 300+ million. Since technically we all are illegal immigrants, well except for the American Indians, and there aren't exactly tons of them around anymore. I think people need to stop worrying about 'illegal immigrants', we all are illegal and they are doing the exact same thing our 4-fathers did. They are looking for a better home and life for them and their families, and is that really a bad thing?
