I am on Lexapro 20 mg.. I cannot sleep at all now. My doctor prescribed trazodone 50mg. Is it safe to mix the two together.
I know they are both anti depressants. I mean, I want to trust my doc, but sometimes they get pill happy.....

Lexapro is a serotogenic antidepressant, which modulates the neurotransmitter that effects your sleep. Within the first 2 weeks of taking Lexapro, you may experience insomnia, but it shouldn't last beyond the first 2 weeks.

I've personally found trazodone to work well as a non-addictive sleep aid, compared to a hipnotic (abien) or benzodiazepine (Xanax) who form dependancy and withdrawal.

Trazodone is a trycylic antidepressant that works similarly to Lexapro - however, trycilic's are antiquated, where there are much more effective antidepressants available today, like Lexapro. Nowadays, Trazodone is primarily used as a sleep aid.

As far as the drug-drug interactions, Trazodone doesn't work well when taking central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol or benzodiazepine, etc. There's no known research showing bad drug-drug interactions to Trazodone and SSRI's.

I really don't understand what you mean by pill happy? A psychopharmacologist aims to cure their patients by putting them on the least amount of medication at the lowest possible dosage, thus improving their condition while providing the least amount of side effects. The reason your Doc is prescibing these meds is that they feel that you will benefit by taking them vs. not taking them.

If you don't trust your Dr. or feel that you can form an honest and open relationship - look for another one until you find someone you are truly comfortable with and can form a very honest and open relationship with.

There are a pleathora of great Doc's out there, but there are certainly some bad ones mixed in.

Feel better

i was on depakote, trazodone, zoloft and klonapin..all at the same time. right now i'm on nothing but lexapro. i stopped taking the depakote because it made me gain weight..trazodone didn't make me eat at all, just knocked me out. i was on 100mg of trazodone, and it was really tough for me to wake up in the morning. but i did get a full night's sleep, sometimes it felt like too much. trazodone is an antidepressant but sometimes it's also used as a sleep aid, as in your case and mine. i think the doc is ok to trust on this one. plus, i've been there too.

Well, I am bi polar and should be on anti depressants, but i'm against them. I had a friend pass away because he switched anti depressants 3 times and his doctor prescribed one and it didn't work so his dr prescribed another....so on and so forth. Now my friend lost his life.

Your pharmacist is trained in drug interactions, best to trust their advice on this issue.
