My cat has just been diagnosed with an absess in his mouth.
He has just recently commenced antibiotics but for the past two days he just lies down and sleeps and has gone off eating and drinking. Can absesses make cats this ill and why?
He was given 10 antibiotic tablets and only taken three so far.
How long could it be until he shows some signs of getting better?
Thanks. He is only very young.

I forgot to add - I took the cat to the vets and the onset of his illness. He gave him
an anti-inflammotory injection and a course of anti-biotics.

If this absess is anything like humans get in the mouth/gums it can be painful & full of puss, no wonder there is no appetite or wanting to have anything going into the mouth area. The vet didn't opt to lance it in the office & get rid of alot of the discomfort, so at least he could eat some?? Without nourishment, there will have to be some type of supplements introduced to keep energy & health up; otherwise, he will whither away & die from being too weak. All that absess is doing is containing all of the infection-poison, it needs to be gotten rid of.
The antibiotics must be finished completely to kill off any lingering effects of the infection still present. But of course, antibiotics might cause the stools to be loose & runny. I have given my cats before an antibiotic in pink colored form that can be given by syringe. I think it even almost smelled like bubble gum, which was kinda weird.

Antibiotics tend to knock us up a bit - even us humans. When my cat was younger, a course of antibiotics will make him sleep and sleep and not eat too much. I used to have to tempt him with really cat-yummy wet foods like tuna liberaaly watered. Try that. And if your cat simply will not eat, go back to the vet and ask for a different antibiotic. I am a bit surprised that they gave you TABLETS! when the kitty's mouth is already sore from the abcess. You should ask for the liquid or syrup type that can be dispensed via medicine dropper or syringe.

If he has an infection in his mouth and it's producing pus, he's probably swallowing it and that is what is making him sick. He probably stopped eating because his mouth his sore. Dry food would be very hard on his mouth and make it more sore. Try giving him canned food but keep the site clean. Another thing you could try to feed him is CatSip. It's a milk made especially for cats and they love it! You can buy it at DrugMart or any pet store. Don't give him the milk you would drink. This will just make things worse because milk causes them to have diarrhea and then they get dehydrated.

several reasons
1. animals are just smarter than we humans. your cat is not eating because that takes energy away from fighting the infection to digest food.
2. an abscess in the mouth has gotten into the system and is not what is called a "systemic" infection. meaning it's throughout the body.
3. basically your cat feels like s**t
4. as with you and I, don't stop the antibiotics till their all gone.

an abcess is a hole with direct access to the blood stream; so anything your cat puts in his mouth gets direct access to his blood and circulatory system.
the antibiotics may be working and that is why he is sleeping so much; we tend to heal better while we are resting and the same is true for all mammals. speak with your vet to determine how much liquid the cat should be taking every day to avoid dehydration and see also if you can give the cat the pills anally if you can't get him to swallow them.
good luck

Well, I am sure you can imagine what kind of pain your cat is in right now. He might like to sleep a lot right now. Keep an eye on him, but if he continues to not eat or drink, see a vet ASAP
