I can't understand this sentence at all.

It would probably be "He cited..."
Anyway it means that the persons this sentence is referring to (i.e. POD & Switchfoot) are considered to be successful artists today but they started as nobodies, i.e. they were not famous when they started.

I would take that to me "he refers to P.O.D and Switchfoot (presumably both bands) who started playing christian music but also achieve sucess in mainstream music."

But I could be wrong.
