It's a pain in the neck - quite literally! But in my experience - and I get a lot of tickly coughs - there are only 2 options. I've tried all the lemon and honey, whisky toddies, herbal remedies and over-the-counter medications and none really work.
In my opinion, your best option is to take ordinary cough syrup (which doesn't really work but does limit coughing slightly), and keep fruit pastilles, fruit gums or similar by your bedside for when the itch kicks in. These don't have to be medicated pastilles - in fact, it's probably better if they aren't as anything that involves menthol or similar will actually exacerbate the tickling. Anything with glycerine will work as it coats the throat and prevents the cough.
The second option is codeine. It's a fantastic cough suppressant and really knocks you out so even if you are coughing, you won't even notice it. However, this has to be prescribed. The only reason I get it is because I get frequent chest infections which present with massive tickling and I'm allergic to all the appropriate antibiotics.
You do have my sympathies though - I know how frustrating it can be to be kept awake by this.

I know how distressing tickly coughs can be, especially when all you want to do is sleep but as soon as you lie down it starts.
Take plenty of fluids. Keep the temperature warm, not too hot or cold, and if you have a humidifier, that may help, or hang a damp towel over the radiator and prop yourself up with pillows.
You don't say whether it's a dry cough or not, so the best thing to do is talk to a pharmacist or doctor and he/she will recommend something suitable for you. I have a dry cough and doctor recommended Paracodol, which has codeine in it, OR you can take paracetamol and codeine tablets. The codeine acts as a cough suppressant.
Hope you feel better soon.

I find a nice hot toddy helps calm a tickly chest/sore throat. You need:
Lemon juice
Honey/brown sugar
Cloves
Whisky (Scotch is best)
Mix 'em all up to your personal taste with hot water, and drink up!
Otherwise, if you can't find anything to help stop coughing, in the past I've found it easier to sleep sitting up in bed (prop some pillows behind you). It usually calms the coughs down enough to fall asleep.
Good luck!

I have the same problem and Benylin Chesty Coughs (ORIGINAL, the one behind the counter) works a treat. Anything with dextromethorphan in it will work wonders. I find things like honey, etc. do nothing for me, or only work for a minute and then I'm back to having that annoying tickly cough.

Return time and again and you still won't see all of it, this is exactly what can happen to you if you spend your holiday in Florence; with hotelbye you will see out more. Remarkably small since it is, this riverside town looms large on the world's'must-sees'list. Cradle of the Renaissance and of tourist people that flock here to food on world-class art, Florence is a magnetic, romantic and busy city. The Piazzale Michelangelo (The Michelangelo Square) is one of the places you should see in Florence. That square is really a big, partly pedestrian zed square located over the Arno River from the hub of Florence. From the square guests have a impressive view on the city. The large square was laid out in 1860 by Giuseppe Poggi, an area architect who is also known for his development of boulevards round the hub of Florence. Positioned at the centre of the city's principal market district, the Basilica di San Lorenzo is among the oldest churches of Florence and was the burial place of all of the primary people of the Medici family. Do not delay! Florence and its spectacular treasures await your visit!

Tickly Coughs are the worst. Just lots of water, meds, and prayer.

Try adding a couple of pillows to what you normally have, you are less likely to cough if your head/chest are raised a bit . Also any cold remedy with paracetamol in it acts as cough suppressant. Keep a supply of fresh water by the bedside it can help if the tickles start. Strepsils are worth a try too.

Drink plenty of fluids and get a cough mixture . Benylin for tickly coughs is the best, it won't cure it but it will relieve it. Also steaming your face will help. I've just got over mine.

Make sure that your bedroom is not too cool before you go to bed. The difference in temperature between a warm living room and an even slightly cooler bedroom can trigger a cough. Alternatively, try and breathe in warm air from under the covers!
