I think there is a lot of misunderstaning here. Atheists are just people. I became an atheist several years ago when I realized that I didnt really believe that things like the virgin birth and resurrection were true. I sat down and started examining what I really did believe and ended up an atheist. It has nothing to do with rejection of authority. I respect government. I am an excellent employee. I am involved politically, ect ect.

I dont "hate" God, or Christians, or anybody. I am definitely not stupid. I am very moral in the way I live my life. I am moral not because of fear of hell, but because I respect the rights of my fellow beings. I think this is a much healthier way to live. I am "good" because its good to be so!

I would ask those of you who are believers in whatever way you choose to respect those of us who do not agree with you. I also would ask you to look at why you do believe, not to make you think like me, but to make sure you really are on a path that is true.

An atheist is a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings. Most people who claim to be are really agnostic which by definition is one who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism or person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience. It's just a belief like any religion or good taste or bad taste. All is ones opinion.

Undoubtedly, there are a few like that.
Then there are some young people who are in their rebellion against everything the "establishment" stands for.
Some few of them honestly cannot accept anything they can't find empirical proof for...they are atheists because they just don't think it's logical to believe in what they consider "outdated" ideas, like religion.
I think the majority of them are really more agnostic than atheist. To be an atheist would seem to imply knowing that there is no God, since certainly an atheist can't believe without proof, right? They like to think they "know"....but...but...but...how can they really be SURE??
Are they really atheists when it is dark and cold and lonely at 2AM?
I wonder............

No atheists are people who do not believe in god because they thank it's illogical. They say to prove he exists yet they chose to neglect the fact that the worlds greatest minds can't prove he don't. They say they believe in science yet neglect the fact that according to cause and effect anything that is, was caused or made by something else. The universe is here so something had to create it and if something like the big bang done that what caused the big bang? So if they believe in logic isn't it logical to say that there is something out there with the power to create a universe in other words a god. And they put to chance their afterlife by not being saved and say it's illogical to believe in god and are willing to risk eternal damnation in case therefore wrong. That is an atheist.

I pray for them all

No, atheists are people who simply don't believe in a deity. We have no reason to believe such a thing exists and that religion is anything else than man-made. It has nothing to do with not wanting anyone to have authority over us, it has everything to do with not following blindly what we're told to believe when it makes no sense to us.

I'm an atheist and I don't have a problem with authority, I simply don't believe there is a god.

Why is it so hard for some theists to understand that we just don't believe the whole thing???

I feel that some atheists (not all) convince themselves that there is no God, because it then absolves them of any responsibility or accountability to a higher power for what they do.

Of course, there are quite a few atheists who are very moral people.

But the question is, WHY should we be moral?

Should we do it to remain in good standing with people -- or should we do it out of love and respect and fear of God?

What? I think you've missed the point a little. Atheists do not believe in God. That does not mean they don't believe in any authority. Where on earth did you get an idea like that?

Who are some famous Atheists?

It’s impossible to compile a complete list of famous atheists. However, this list includes some of the more notable ones.

One that surprised me in my research was Benjamin Franklin. He lived from 1706 to 1790 and was responsible for many scientific discoveries, including electricity. In one biography about Franklin comes this quote “The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason.”

Napoleon Bonaparte was another famous atheist. He believed that ‘religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet.’

Another famous atheist is Charles Darwin, the founder of the theory of evolution. His theory has caused enormous controversies over the years. Purportedly, on his deathbed, he renounced his theory of evolution, however it cannot be proven because there was only one witness.

Additional atheists, now deceased, include Susan B. Anthony, suffragette; Sigmund Freud, Austrian physician and pioneer psycho-analyst; Marie-Curie, Polish born French chemist and physicist; Albert Einstein, W. C. Fields, Karl Marx, James Madison, Francios Voltaire, and Edgar Allan Poe.

There is a celebrity atheist list, also. Several of the names are surprising too. Lance Armstrong, Marlon Brando, Rodney Dangerfield, Phil Donahue, Roger Ebert, Jodie Foster, Bill Gates, Katharine Hepburn, Billy Joel, Angelina Jolie, Diane Keaton, Margot Kidder, Bruce Lee, Tom Lehrer, Barry Manilow, John Malkovich, Jack Nicholson, Paula Poundstone, Ron Reagan Jr., Keanu Reeves, George Soros, and the list goes on and on.

Most of the time, you can tell what a person believes by their lifestyle and the words that come from their mouth. An atheist has a hard time believing in anything other than his/her own reason. Reason is something that was given to man to be able to deduce solutions to problems. It is also able to make us feel like gods when we place more value on our own knowledge than what is told in the Bible.

I am a Buddhist, (read weak atheist); and an Anarchist. There is no rational reason to accept the imposition of any arbitrary, or irrational form of authority. However, my atheism is not a direct result of my aversion to authority. Both my atheism and my anarchism derive from my conclusion that both theism and arbitrary authority are illogical. Theism is unprovable, and arbitrary authority is inhumane.

No, and ignorant associative assertions like that are extremely annoying. Doctors know all about the body and spend their lives healing people. Are all of them health nuts? No. I know a few people whose parents are psychologists/psychiatrists. It's amazing how messed up the children of people who counsel for a living are. They should know how to raise kids the best, right?
