yes they can hurt, it depends on how easily they can slip the needle into the space to get the fluid, They had trouble getting mine and had to stick a few times.

do you mean a lumbar puncture? they will sedate you or numb the area. you may have soreness around the area but that is about all. believe me I had an anterior/posterior spinal fusion a puncture is a cake walk. good luck I hope your test comes out neg. but don't put the test off, meningitis is nothing to play with.

there's a local anesthesia. so injecting anesthesia would hurt. but you have to bear the pain because this procedure is important to correctly diagnose meningitis and its cause so that the doctor will give you the right medication.
