If your road tax has run out at the end of the month, you have 14 days to declare SORN.
Do you also have 14 days to tax the car or does this have to be done straight away?
What if you were caught with road tax that was 10 days out of date, what would happen?

You have to tax the car straight away. The problem would be if you were flashed by a roadside camera van looking for cars with out of date tax discs, or random checks. They are not lenient and you would be fined. An untaxed car on the street opplosite has just been clamped and labelled with 'warning do not attempt to remove'. The owner has had to pay up and pay a fine.

No vehicle is allowed on the road without displaying the tax disc properly so yes you have to get it straight away and you will be fined/points on licence if you get caught driving without a tax disc.

You are committing an offence as soon as the tax runs out if your car is on a public road. However the police don't normally do anything if the car is just parked up. If you are going to use the car it needs to be taxed

Hope this helps

HAPPY DAYS

There is no period of grace for taxing a car. You must have the car taxed straightaway as the Swansea computer will automatically issue a fine upon expiry, unless you've already submitted a SORN. Furthermore the vehicle's insurance may be invalid if the car's not taxed - something to consider.

The d.v.l.a. will send you a letter a month before your tax runs out reminding you of the date you have to renew you disc you can do this on the day it runs out at any main post office, if you are caught driving with an out of date tax disc you will be prosecuted

If your tax is out even by a day technically its not rodworthy therefor your insurance is invalid, the small print states that the vehicle to which this insurance applies shall be in a roadworthy state at all times, this includes tax, insurance and MOT, only exception is if taking to a MOT testing station which has been pre-booked.

You used to have 14 days to tax your car. Now it must be taxed straight away. If you are caught within 10 days you are quite likely to be prosecuted and the police would be within their rights to impound your vehicle and even dispose of it.

Unfortunatly they now have a computer database that automatically issues you with a fine....so you need to tax straight away..i was a few days late this year (3-4 i think) and got away with it, so i tihnk their comoputer system does give you a few days lee way...but its best not to risk it! :) only takes a few mins and you can do it online now....that way they can see you have paid straight away, rather than a few days in the post.
