You should believe in whatever your own investigation into the facts indicates as right.
Personally I believe psychotherapy was revolutionary and helped paved the way for the other forms of modern therapy... that are more useful. (Not to say it doesn't have some good ideas, but that's why I think a therapist with an eclectic approach is best. Then they can pick and choose the best and most effective methods for them and their clients. I'm just not a big fan of Freud and nearly all of his ideas.)
I'm not sure if you mean the more practical or theoretical stuff. Practically what is clear is that psychotherapy is not the most effective in short-term solutions and it can be a long and expensive process before real improvement is made. (But some may argue it's more long lasting and useful in the long run)
Theoretically I just disagree with Freud on nearly everything.
If you want to read an interesting article/study on its effectiveness http://horan.asu.edu/cpy702readings/seligman/seligman.html

I think this answered your question... you didn't expand much..so if you were looking for something different... ask another question.
Happy holidays.

Added: I'm sure there are some awful psychotherapists/psychologists/counselors etc. out there that don't really care about their clients at all and are just in it for the money, but don't go to those! The majority really do care. There are a lot of trained professionals out there and there is no need to work with one that you don't feel comfortable with. Find one that fits with you and you'll have a valuable resource.

do you know how much education a person needs to be a liscensed psychiatrist or practicing psychotherapist? Or how intense the competition is to get into a graduate-level clinical psychology program?

trust me, if they were just going to laugh at you, they wouldn't have spent so much time and money on education when they could have used it to get a start in the business world and make a lot more money.

Laughing at you is what your friends are for. And maybe they have a point?

There is no such thing as mental disorder, so there is no psychotherapy as well , but the right answer to your question is that you should decide yourself whether you believe in anything or not

That is the beauty of Science you do not have to believe in it to work. That what differentiates it from faith healing.
